Satsuma Kiriko: A Legacy of the Shimazu Clan This exquisite glasswork was established by Nariakira Shimazu, the 28th lord of the Satsuma Domain, as part of his visionary “Shuseikan” industrial project. The stunning gradations—created by layering colored glass over clear glass and meticulously cutting through—possess a unique beauty found in no other glasscraft. The “Rings-R” collection features simple cuts that elegantly showcase the origins and craftsmanship of Satsuma Kiriko. This series is an exclusive edition available only at the d47 Kagoshima store—a treasure you can find nowhere else.
Ryumonji-yaki (Pottery) 1

Ryumonji-yaki (Pottery)

Ryumonji-yaki: The Spirit of Black Satsuma The roots of Ryumonji-yaki trace back to the early Genroku era (late 17th century), established by potters from the Korean Peninsula who carried on the traditions of the ancient Kochosa ware. While several kilns existed before the war, they later merged to form the Ryumonji-yaki Cooperative, becoming the leading representative of “Kuro Satsuma” (Black Satsuma) pottery. Crafted entirely from local clay and raw materials, the ware is celebrated for its diverse natural glazes—such as the distinctive “Same-hada” (sharkskin) and “Dakatsu” (snake-skin) glazes found nowhere else. Its rustic, powerful texture brings a profound presence to any setting.
